Authentic, lasting learning requires a meaningful context, and it happens best in the company of other learners. Yet in too many schools around the world, “learning” consists of a list of isolated facts or disconnected skills, and students are required to work in isolation or in poorly structured “group work” tasks where very few take an active role. At TresColumnae, we reject this approach:
- Facts and skills are integrated into a continuing story, not presented in isolation;
- Facts and skills are not an end in themselves! Instead, you use them to create your own meaningful, interesting stories (or other content).
- The content that you create never ends up in a teacher's file cabinet, and it's not discarded at the end of the school year! Instead, you share it with a community of other learners ... and what you created today might still be helping others many years from now!
- Facts and skills are also tools that we use on a continuing quest for answers to burning questions ... including questions that you propose. At Tres Columnae, as you learn more about Latin and the Romans, you'll also learn more about yourself, about your own culture, and about learning itself.
These are just a few of the ways we restore the Joyful side of Learning.
